Lesson 7-19 To Hear and Not Understand

Our number one desire for these Bible lessons are for them to be understandable, defendable, and most important for the Holy Spirit to bear witness that the conclusions are the true, and correct interpretation of the Holy Scriptures.

Guidelines for our Bible studies on this website:

1. We treat the living words of the living God as spoken by the Lord Jesus and given to the Apostle Paul for the Body of Christ the same importance, as the words of the Lord Jesus recorded in red letters in the books of Matthew – Acts Chp. 8, as what should be known as the instructions to the nation Israel.
2. We will not be wresting the scriptures against each other, we will look at the verses in their context, and will not try to make the scriptures say anything, but what they say.
3. We will be using the verses out of the Authorized Version, commonly known as the KJV. If you want to look the verses up in other translations you can, but we will consider the Authorized Version as our final written authority.
4. We do not and will not use the Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, or Latin languages to prove any points, or give any indication that the Authorized Version has been incorrectly translated.

I hope these studies are interesting enough to provoke you to study your Bible, and for you to grow in the grace and knowledge of our savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul said in 2 Tim. Chp 2 verse [15] “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

Every Southern Baptist preacher, and other supposed Greek Scholar, use the verses below to make you think that you need their superior intellect, and knowledge of the Greek Language to understand these simple verses. They stain at gnats and swallow camels!

I now want to share with you an example of how these silly Greek language obsessed preachers, mislead and deceive young new Christian converts. Us older Christians are a little harder to fool with their Satanic deceptions.

Acts 9 “[4] And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? [5] And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. [6] And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do. [7] And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.”

Acts 22 “[7] And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? [8] And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest. [9] And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.”

Issue: They take the young Christians to the passages and show them that in Chp. 9 where it is recorded that the men with Paul heard the voice of the Lord Jesus, but in Chp. 22 it is recorded they heard not the voice of the Lord Jesus. A supposed contradiction?

What they tell the young Christians: That the only way to understand the supposed contradiction is for a person with their superior intellect and knowledge of the Greek Language to clear this up for the unlearned baby Christian.

Well let’s check and see if this argument is true. As always, I like to use the word of the living God to test what people teach.

In Matt. we find the following two verses that I believe can help us understand and clear up any confusion with the verses in Acts, without having to go to an outside source such as the Greek language to clear up this issue.

Matt. 13 “[13] Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand. [14] And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:”

Notice in the verses that we have a similar word pattern, Jesus speaks the words “hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.” Then he quotes the Old Testament prophet Esaias who said “By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand”.

It is clear that these people heard his words, but did not understand the words, in verse thirteen he accuses them of not hearing or understanding.

Now let’s go back to Acts and look at these verses in light of a little study, “[7] And the men which journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice, but seeing no man.” “[9] And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.”

In Acts Chp. 9 verse 7 Paul said they heard a voice, I propose to you, when he was retelling the story about his conversion in Chp. 22 verse 9, he was simply saying that the men with him did not understand the words of the voice that they heard in Chp. 9.

Now a side story my wife Theresa calls out to me one day when I am in another room of the house, I without even thinking about it, yelled back at her “Theresa I can’t hear you!”. Did I mean that I did not hear her voice, no of course not, I heard her voice, but could not understand what she said.

You be the judge!

When I was a young Christian it was stated that if you removed the proper names from an Authorized Version/KJV that it was on a fourth-grade reading level.

I run into College graduates all the time that tell me they can’t understand it.

The problem is not the readability, the problem is the words of the Bible can only be discerned and understood by Christians who have been sealed with the Holy Spirit.

No amount of seminary training can help if you are lost, you can never get it!

1Cor. 2 “[13] Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual. [14] But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”

Be like the Bereans; Acts 17 "[11] These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so." they searched the scriptures daily to make the things they believed were correct.

I am so thankful for the Preachers that were my mentors were Bible Believers and not bible correctors!

Satan is having a field day with the Body of Christ with all these modern-day preachers proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom with its earthly kingdom hope, repentance, confession of sins, and water baptism required to be saved or a member of a denomination, Miraculous signs as evidence of salvation, such as speaking in tongues and healing; Teaching the observance of the law, teaching the conditional forgiveness of sins based on forgiving others, teaching forsaking all and selling all to gain eternal life, Having the authority to forgive sins, Reaching Jerusalem and Israel first.

These things are simply incompatible with the truths found in the Pauline epistles, and the gospel of the grace of God. Even if you believe the Bible and you fail to understand the word of truth rightly divided you can still be misled, not lost just misled, and rendered a useless Christian witness.

We are saved not by our works, but by our faith in the crucified and risen Lord Jesus!

With modern day technology being what it is, it is very easy to do word searches and check when someone quotes a Bible verse or tells you something is in the Bible for you to look it up and verify if they are pulling your leg!

The Truth of God’s Holy word is easy to determine if you let the Holy Spirit lead you.

Remember all of the confusion among Christianity/Christians today can be attributed to the simple fact that the church, the Body of Christ, does not recognize the separate, distinct, and unique apostleship, ministry, and message of Paul.

If you have never trusted the Lord Jesus as your savior, I encourage you to believe in him and invite him to save you today! All one need do is to trust and believe in the Lord Jesus’s death, burial and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins to be made new in him.

Gal.2 [16] Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified

Eph.3 [17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [19] And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

What a great day that will be when Jesus Christ returns in all his glory, friend don’t let that day take you unawares. Today Jesus has his arms outstretched and open to sinners to put their trust in him. One day we will all stand before him either as our savior or our judge, don’t put it off invite Jesus to save you today!

"The crowd that will not accept one truth will decay to the point that it does not accept one God: many denominations, many translations, many gods."

The words of our Apostle Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles!

2Tim.2 [15] Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
