Our
number one desire for these Bible lessons are for them to be understandable,
defendable, and for the Holy Spirit to bear witness that the conclusions are
the true and correct interpretation of the Holy Scriptures.
Guidelines
for our Bible studies on this website:
1. We treat the living words of the
living God as spoken by the Lord Jesus and given to the Apostle Paul for the
Body of Christ the same importance, as
the words of the Lord Jesus recorded in red
letters in the books of Matthew – Acts Chp. 8, as what should be known as the
instructions to the nation Israel.
2. We will not be wresting the scriptures
against each other, we will look at the verses in their context, and will not
try to make the scriptures say anything, but what they say.
3. We will be using the verses out of the
Authorized Version, commonly known as the KJV. It is fine if you want to look
the verses up in other translations if you like, but we will consider the
Authorized Version as our final written authority.
4. We do not and will not use the Greek,
Hebrew, Aramaic, or Latin languages to prove any points, or give any indication
that the Authorized Version has been incorrectly translated.
I
hope these studies are interesting enough to provoke you to study your Bible
and for you to grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ.
In
our last lesson on unlearning unsound doctrine we looked at some reasons why people
when confronted with sound doctrine have a tendency to reject it.
We
will continue with this theme for the next few lessons and hopefully this
information will help us to become better Christian witnesses. As always we
will go to the living words of the living God to get our information and let
the Holy Spirt make the scriptures clear to us by comparing scripture with
scripture.
Matt.22 [23] The same day came to him the Sadducees, which say that
there is no resurrection, and asked him, [24] Saying, Master, Moses said,
If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise
up seed unto his brother. [25] Now there were with us seven brethren: and
the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his
wife unto his brother: [26] Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the
seventh. [27] And last of all the woman died also. [28] Therefore in
the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had
her.
Here
in this confrontation with Jesus the Sadducees begin the process of trying to
trap the Lord Jesus in his own words.
The
wonderful part is the Lord Jesus could read their minds, he knew what they were
going ask him before they ever opened their mouth to ask the question. I’m
going to tell you right up front, the fact that he knew the question the
Sadducees were going to ask before they even showed up to his location to try
and trap in his answer to them, gave him a big advantage over them.
So
notice in verse 23 we get some valuable information that the Sadducees didn’t even
believe in the resurrection from the dead, and yet here they are asking the
Lord Jesus a question about the resurrection. This clearly shows they were not
interested in the truth or the answer other than to try use his answer against
him.
Over
the years I have seen many people ask Christians questions not because they
were interested in the answer, but were simply trying to find an occasion to
use the answers against the Christian.
Continuing,
all the brothers died, the woman died, and the Sadducees now ask the question
of Jesus that they thought he would not be able to answer, whose wife would she
be in the resurrection?
Matt.22 [29] Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the
scriptures, nor the power of God.
Notice
that immediately the Lord Jesus points out the fact that they are in error,
they are holding on to unsound doctrine. He points out they do not know the
scriptures, nor the power of God. The word of God defines this as willful
ignorance. People most of the time are willing ignorant of the truth as they
simply do not take the time to study God’s Holy Word to discern truth from
error.
Matt.22 [30] For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in
marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven.
In
verse 30 Jesus tells the Sadducees in the resurrection they neither marry nor
are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven, thus answering the
question of whose wife she will be, she won’t be any of the brother’s wife! That
is not how things are going to work during and after the resurrection.
Matt.22 [31] But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not
read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, [32] I am the God of
Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of
the dead, but of the living.
Exod.3 [6] Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of
Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
I
want you to notice in verse 31 and 32 he goes even further to rebuke them and
their false doctrine when Jesus points out that he is the God of Abraham, not
was the God of Abraham. The verse he quotes out of the Old Testament is the same
verse that he, the Lord Jesus, spoke to Moses thousands of years earlier.
Hopefully
if you have been studying with us for any length of time you understand that
the Lord Jesus Christ is the God not only of the New Testament, but the God of
the Old Testament as well.
Matt.22 [33] And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at
his doctrine.
Exodus 3 [6] Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of
Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for
he was afraid to look upon God.
In
Matt.22 verse 33 we see the multitude of people who witnessed this encounter
were astonished at his doctrine. The definition of astonish is, to strike with sudden fear or to strike with
sudden and usually great wonder or surprise. Notice when the Lord Jesus
first spoke those same words in Exodus, Moses was afraid to look upon God.
I
believe that when the Lord Jesus finished this encounter with the Sadducees
that they and the people realized Jesus was more than just mortal man, similar
to what Moses had experienced thousands of years earlier.
When
you have time you should review the passages below in their context and there
is only one conclusion that you can arrive at and that is Jesus Christ is
the very God of Heaven and Earth!
Matt.8 [27] But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!
Matt.13 [54] And when he was come into his own country, he taught them in
their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
Mark.1 [22] And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority,
and not as the scribes.
Luke.2 [47] And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
Luke.4 [32] And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
Luke.20 [26] And they could not take hold of his words before the people:
and they marvelled at his answer,
and held their peace.
John.7 [15] And the Jews marvelled, saying, How knoweth this man letters, having
never learned?
John7 [46] The officers answered, Never
man spake like this man.
John.9 [30] The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know
not from whence he is, and yet he hath
opened mine eyes. This
man was born blind!
If you have never trusted the Lord Jesus as your savior, I
encourage you to believe in him and invite him to save you today! All one needs
to do is to trust and believe in the Lord Jesus’s death, burial and
resurrection for the forgiveness of sins to be made new in him.
Gal.2 [16] Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the
law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus
Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ,
and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the
law shall no flesh be justified
Eph.3 [17] That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith;
that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, [19] And to know the love
of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the
fulness of God.
What
a great day that will be when Jesus Christ returns in all his glory, friend
don’t let that day take you unawares. Today Jesus has his arms outstretched and
open to sinners to put their trust in him. One day we will all stand before him
either as our savior or our judge, don’t put it off invite Jesus to save you today!
"The
crowd that will not accept one truth will decay to the point that it does not
accept one God: many denominations, many translations, many gods."
All of the confusion among Christianity/Christians today can be
attributed to the simple fact that the church, the Body of Christ, does not
recognize the separate, distinct, and unique apostleship, ministry, and message
of Paul.
The
words of our Apostle Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles!
2Tim.2 [15] Study
to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be
ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
