I ask that as we go through these lessons,
that you get a Bible, read it, pray, study, and ask the Holy Spirit of the
Living God, to help guide you into truth.
Comparing scripture with scripture, and comparing spiritual
things with spiritual things, is the only way Christians are able to discern
truth from error.
In this lesson we will look at how rightly
dividing the word of truth helps us to answer the questions in the title of
this week’s lesson. If you fail to understand, or fail to learn how to rightly
divide the word of truth, you can never come to the knowledge of the truth and
sound doctrine.
We will continue with the doctrine of
Jesus being God manifest in the flesh as the subject for the next few lessons.
There is probably no greater misunderstood doctrine in the Bible than who Jesus
the Christ is.
Once again we will not be going to
scholars for an answer to this question, as you can never know who Jesus is
through intellect, but only by the Holy Spirit of the living God, we will go to
no other place than the Holy Scriptures, the Bible (KJV) to find out who Jesus
is and claimed to be.
In this lesson we will continue to look
at Old Testament verses fulfilled in the New Testament by the Lord Jesus, which
reveal that Jesus was in fact the Lord God of Heaven and Earth indwelling a
human body.
Psalms
107 [23] They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in
great waters; [24] These see the
works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep. [25] For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, which lifteth
up the waves thereof. [27] They
reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits' end. [28] Then they cry unto the LORD in
their trouble, and he bringeth them out of their distresses. [29]
He maketh the storm a calm, so that the waves thereof are still. [30]
Then are they glad because they be quiet; so he bringeth them unto their
desired haven. [31] Oh that men would praise the LORD for his goodness, and for
his wonderful works to the children of men!
When we look at these verses in
Psalms we see a story of men who go down to the sea in ships, we are told that
they see the works of the LORD, we see that the LORD commandeth and raises the
stormy winds and that this action brings men to their wits end. When they get
to their wits end they cry unto the LORD in trouble and he takes away their
distresses. How does the LORD do this, he makes the storm a calm and stills the
waves, then the men are glad and get safely to their haven or destination!
Now let us compare this story with
the story of Jesus covered in Luke chp. 8 verses 22-26.
Luke 8 [22] Now it
came to pass on a certain day, that he (Jesus) went into a ship with his
disciples: and he said unto them, Let us go over unto the other side of the
lake. And they launched forth. [23]
But as they sailed he fell asleep: and there came down a storm of wind on the
lake; and they were filled with water, and were in jeopardy. [24]
And they came to him, and awoke him, saying, Master, master, we perish. Then he
(Jesus) arose, and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water:
and they ceased, and there was a calm. [25] And he said unto them, Where is your faith? And they being
afraid wondered, saying one to another, What manner of man is this! for
he (Jesus) commandeth even the winds and water, and they obey him. [26] And they arrived at the country of
the Gadarenes, which is over against Galilee.
Now in these verses in Luke we see
Jesus, and his disciples enter into a ship to take a trip to the other side of
the lake. While on the way Jesus falls asleep and while asleep a storm arises
and the ship is in jeopardy of being lost. Notice the disciple’s attitude, they
believe that they are going to perish when they come to Jesus and awake him, I
would say they are at their wits end, what do you think?
Now pay close attention to how Jesus
responds after being awakened, Jesus shows no fear of perishing, then rebukes
the wind and raging water, everything then becomes calm! Jesus then asks his
disciples “Where is your Faith?”
His disciples now look at each other,
and asked a question that has only one correct answer!
Matt. 8 [27] But the
men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and
the sea obey him!
The only correct answer to this question
has to be based on the scriptures, and not the opinions of the Ancient Aliens TV
show, or of some Dr. of Theology, or some University Professor, remember you can never know Jesus Christ through intellectual learning.
One can only come to the conclusion
that Jesus Christ was, and is the Old Testament God indwelling that human body
that was specially created for God to indwell! Even though God (Jesus) was in that
human body, we see that he continued to have control over all things in the
Earth, and never ceased being in total control.
Luke 1 [31] And,
behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call
his name JESUS. [32] He shall
be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the
Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: [33] And he shall reign over the
house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
[34] Then said Mary unto the
angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? [35] And the angel answered and said
unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the
Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which
shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
Hebrews 10 [5] Wherefore when he (Jesus) cometh
into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a
body hast thou prepared me: [6]
In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure. [7] Then said I, Lo, I come (in the
volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
In these verses when we do a verse by
verse comparison, I believe that the Holy Spirit of the Living God testifies to
the New Testament fulfilment by the Lord Jesus. I have stated this many times,
but will state it again, I believe when we look at the scriptures, and let the
Holy Spirit reveal the truth of God’s Holy Word, Christian believers are able
to spiritually discern the word of truth, and come to the same understanding of
his word and who Jesus the Christ is.
Now let us look at the next proof
text of who Jesus is!
Psalms 89 [8] O LORD God of hosts, who is a
strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee? [9]
Thou rulest the raging of the sea: when the waves thereof arise, thou
stillest them.
Matt. 14 [22] And
straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go
before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. [23] And when he had sent the
multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening
was come, he was there alone. [24]
But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the
wind was contrary. [25] And in
the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. [26] And when the disciples saw him
walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit;
and they cried out for fear. [27]
But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it
is I; be not afraid. [28]
And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto
thee on the water. [29] And he
said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the
water, to go to Jesus. [30]
But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he
cried, saying, Lord, save me. [31]
And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said
unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? [32]
And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. [33] Then they that were in the ship
came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Now in these verses we see even more
proof of Jesus control over the physical elements of planet Earth. Probably
most you studying with us know of the story of Jesus walking on the water. It
is a simple story but the details offer us even more proof that Jesus was not
just some normal human being.
Jesus sends his disciples away in the
ship, during the night the ship is tossed with the waves. In the fourth watch
Jesus shows up walking on the sea and when the disciples see him they scream
with fear because they think it is a spirit.
The story goes on and Peter asks if
it is really you, I would like to come to you. Jesus says come on and Peter
gets out of the ship, walks on the water to Jesus, but then begins to sink for
fear of the wind, Peter then calls on Jesus to save him, of course Jesus
reaches out and saves him, then they get into the ship.
Upon entry into the ship the wind
ceases, and then a very important thing happens, we have covered this subject
before, but the point must be made every time it happens. The people in the
ship “came and worshipped him”, worship is an act that Jesus told Satan that is
reserved only for the Lord God. (Matt. 4 [10] Then
saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt
worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.)
But here again Jesus full well
accepted their worship, and doesn’t rebuke them for worshipping him because he is
God manifest in the flesh.
Once again the evidence of the Fact
that Jesus was God manifest in the flesh is so overwhelming that to deny it, is
to deny the very words of the Living God as recorded in the Bible.
The Bible is an easy book to
understand when you just read, and believe it, not try and make it say things
it doesn’t say.
As far as spiritual discernment, when you
know where to get your doctrine from, you will no longer be a confused
Christian, or an easy target by the sleight of men to deceive you.
Romans 10 [8] But what saith it? The word is nigh
thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we
preach; [9] That if thou shalt confess
with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God
hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man
believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto
salvation.
