Lesson 23 Who Is Jesus? Is He God In Flesh? Who Did He Claim To Be? Part 4

I ask that as we go through these lessons, that you get a Bible, read it, pray, study, and ask the Holy Spirit of the Living God, to help guide you into truth.

Comparing scripture with scripture, and comparing spiritual things with spiritual things, is the only way Christians are able to discern truth from error.

In this lesson we will look at how rightly dividing the word of truth helps us to answer the questions in the title of this week’s lesson. If you fail to understand, or fail to learn how to rightly divide the word of truth, you can never come to the knowledge of the truth and sound doctrine.

We will continue to look at the doctrine of Jesus being God manifest in the flesh as the subject for probably two or three more lessons. If you stay with us until we complete these lessons you will be able to defend your faith against those who see Jesus as only a good teacher, a good man, or some kind of deranged lunatic.

There is probably no greater misunderstood doctrine in the Bible than who Jesus the Christ is.

Once again we will not be going to scholars for an answer to this question, as you can never know who Jesus is through intellect, but only by the Holy Spirit of the living God, so we will go to no other place than the Holy Scriptures, the Bible (KJV) to find out who Jesus is and claimed to be.

In this lesson we will continue to look at Old Testament verses fulfilled in the New Testament by the Lord Jesus, which reveal that Jesus was in fact the Lord God of Heaven and Earth indwelling a human body.

I believe this weeks lesson will be a blessing to all who read and understand it, once again we will start with the Old Testament and see where Jesus fulfills the verses in the New Testament.

Pss.146  [5] Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the LORD his God: [6] Which made heaven, and earth, the sea, and all that therein is: which keepeth truth for ever: [7] Which executeth judgment for the oppressed: which giveth food to the hungry. The LORD looseth the prisoners: [8] The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind: the LORD raiseth them that are bowed down: the LORD loveth the righteous: [9] The LORD preserveth the strangers; he relieveth the fatherless and widow: but the way of the wicked he turneth upside down.

Now pay attention to the verses in Psalm 146, there is no doubt whose God is being described in these verses. We see in verse five, it is the God of Jacob who makes a person happy, gives hope, who made heaven, earth, the sea and all therein. The Lord God executes judgement, gives food to the hungry, etc. I bet a lot of you students of the Bible can read these verses, and tie many of these same attributes, if not all, to the Lord Jesus Christ.

In this lesson I want to concentrate on the first 8 words of verse 8 The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind:”.

We are going now to the New Testament John Chp. 9, the entire chapter revolves around a blind man, I recommend after you read this lesson, that you read the entire chapter again, and let the Holy Spirit of the Living God make it come alive for you, it contains some of the most well-known verses in the Bible.

John.9  [1] And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

Here we see one of the most important points of this story, this blind man was born blind from his birth, he never saw anything in his whole life, nothing, remember this fact!

John.9 [2] And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? [3] Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

Jesus’s disciples ask him the question why was he blind, did he sin, or his parents, the disciples figured he was blind because of some sin that he, or parents, had committed. Jesus answers and told them it had nothing to do with sin, but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. In other words something miraculous was going to happen in this encounter with the blind man.

John.9 [4] I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work. [5] As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

Jesus makes one of his I am statements here in verse 5, he states he is the light of the world. I will not digress at this time, but when Jesus said I am, he was identifying himself as the God of the Old Testament, the great “I AM That I AM” but that is a study in and of itself.

John.9 [6] When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, [7] And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

In verses 6 and 7 we see Jesus interact with this blind man. He then spits on the ground makes some clay of the spit and anoints the blind man’s eyes. He then sends him off to wash in the pool of Siloam. The blind man goes, washes, and comes back seeing.

John.9 [8] The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged? [9] Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he. [10] Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

Now the questions come, first from the neighbors. We see the neighbors trying to decide if this is the person whom they recognize, but don’t recognize totally, because there is something very different about him now. He can see them and they know that he can see them! He then tells them, it is me, and that great truth has now become apparent “the blind man can now see”! Now they want to know how that happened, how were your eyes opened?

John.9 [11] He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight. [12] Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

He tells them the story of his meeting with Jesus and very simply how it was he came to be able to see. The neighbors then want to know where Jesus is, the former blind man tells them I don’t know.

John.9 [13] They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind. [14] And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes. [15] Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

Now the story gets really interesting, the neighbors bring him to the Pharisees and the questions begin again, how did you receive your sight, he tells them the same story about Jesus making the clay, putting it on his eyes, him washing and then being able to see.

John.9 [16] Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

Now as always it is decision time, some of the Pharisees try to discredit Jesus and accuse him of breaking one of the Ten Commandments which would make him a sinner, but some others are having a little trouble believing a sinner could do such a miracle.

John.9 [17] They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

The questioning now moves for a minute away from the blind man’s condition, to who Jesus said he was, and we get the answer Jesus said a prophet!

John.9 [18] But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight. [19] And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see? [20] His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind: [21] But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself. [22] These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue. [23] Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

More questions because they didn’t believe he had been blind, so they question the parents, is this your son, was he born blind? How is it that now he sees? The parents confirm, yep that’s our son, and he was born blind, but we don’t know how, or who, opened his eyes, he’s old enough ask him, he can speak for himself.

We learn now that the parents were not exactly being honest with the Jews, but feared if they confessed Jesus they would be put out of the synagogue. Nothing has changed in this world, it is still the religious people who reject Jesus.

John.9 [24] Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

Again the Jews call the man that was blind, and now declare Jesus to be a sinner.

John.9 [25] He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

I love the former blind man’s answer, I don’t know if he is a sinner or not, but I know this, I was blind and now I see!

John.9 [26] Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes? [27] He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

Here we go again how did he open your eyes? We see the former blind man get a little testy with the Jews, I already told you, and you didn’t listen, if I tell you again will you listen? Will you also become one of his disciples?

John.9 [28] Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples. [29] We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

Now the Jews get really mad, and revile (criticize in an abusive or angrily insulting manner)
the former blind man, and tell him they are Moses’ disciples, they confirm they believe that God spoke to Moses, but this Jesus we don’t know where he is from.

John.9 [30] The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes. [31] Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth. [32] Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind. [33] If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

I just love this story, now we see this former blind man become the teacher, remember our proof text, Pss.146  The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind:” the Pharisees should have known that this was indeed the very prophet Moses wrote about in “Deut. 18 [15] The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;”.

They should have recognized Jesus as the God of the Old Testament, since it was foretold that The LORD openeth the eyes of the blind:”. Jesus opens the eyes of a person born blind, the LORD opens the eyes of the blind, one must come to the simple conclusion that Jesus is the LORD, it’s that simple, you just have read and believe it!

John.9 [34] They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out. [35] Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God? [36] He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him? [37] And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee. [38] And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshiped him.

We see the Jews now get mad and cast the former blind man out! Jesus has one more interaction with this blind man, he ask him if he believes on the Son of God, the ex-blind man asked him who he is that he might believe on him. Jesus tells him that it’s me that you're talking to. The ex-blind man now worships Jesus and once again as in the prior lessons Jesus doesn’t rebuke him but receives his worship as Jesus is the God of heaven and earth, he is God manifest in the flesh!
Once again the evidence of the Facts that Jesus was God manifest in the flesh is so overwhelming that to deny it, is to deny the very words of the Living God as recorded in the Bible.

The Bible is an easy book to understand when you just read, and believe it, and don't try and make it say things it doesn’t say.

As far as spiritual discernment, when you know where to get your doctrine from, you will no longer be a confused Christian, or an easy target by the sleight of men to deceive you.

Romans 10 [8] But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; [9] That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. [10] For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

The words of our Apostle Paul, the Apostle to the Gentiles!
